The Froggy, Geron, Gamal, and Plutos are Aquatic monsters encountered in Dark Chronicle. They are large, humanoid-sized amphibians that primarily sit in a low crouch.

Characteristics

Appearance

These creatures possess thick hind legs for jumping, but instead of conventional arms, they feature a set of long, leathery, wing-like membranes that stretch from their shoulders to their hips; despite this appearance, they do not fly. The base Froggy is primarily green with a pale yellow belly. The Geron is a mottled brown color, featuring a pattern of spots on its chest. The Gamal is a deep dark red. The final variant, Plutos, is a bright golden-yellow with dark mottled spots on its wings and glowing yellow eyes.

Personality

The Froggy monsters express strong weather dependence, frequently wishing for rain, which gives them energy, and becoming depressed during droughts.[1][2] They have a surprisingly developed social structure involving specific names like Froggius, Ribbie, Ribbio, and Master Toada, a figure of frog legend whom they call upon for aid.[1][3] They are capable of laying thousands of eggs, and a Geron is known to have a house full of newly hatched tadpoles.[1][2] They show a complicated relationship with humans, expressing shock that they are sometimes kept as pets, and a Geron is driven by revenge after their mother was killed by humans.[1][2]

Each variant expresses unique lifestyle struggles: The Plutos are focused on strategy and the difficulties of aging, lamenting that they can no longer jump as they used to and discussing tactics to handle the increasingly "wise" humans.[3] The Geron are vain, complimenting each other on beautiful eyes and facial patterns, and are very self-conscious about their developing "wing things" which they cannot actually use to fly.[2] The Gamals are centered on hibernation, weight management (trying to avoid becoming "fat gourmet frogs"), and the basic need for food and water.[4]

Gameplay

Appearances

The Froggy first appears in the "To the Outside World" floor of the Underground Channel, and then again in "Battle with Rats" and "Sweet, Scary Treasure Chest". The Geron is found in the Ocean's Roar Cave on the "Pirates!", "Tons of Fish", and "Scary Auntie Medusa" floors. The Gamal is encountered in the Zelmite Mine on the "Powerful Frog" floor. The Plutos is found in the Zelmite Mine Depths on the "Road to Truth" floor.

Combat

The Froggy and its variations possess two attacks: a close-range jump kick and a medium-range poison spit attack. Both attacks can be blocked, but they will still pierce through the block and inflict reduced damage, and their poison spit attack still inflicts the Poison status ailment. They can also, rarely, block attacks with their feet.

Because of their hopping movement they are fairly slow and easily defeated with ranged attacks, which has the added benefit of avoiding their poisonous spit. All types are specifically weak to the Sword weapon type (120% damage bonus) and are generally weak to the Chill and Scale attributes. The original Froggy is notable for being extremely vulnerable to the Cyclone attribute (300% bonus). The Gamal is the only type resistant to Beam projectiles (50% damage).

Monster transformation

The Froggy, and its stronger variations, can all be appeased with a Gift Capsule filled with three Battans. Killing an appeased Froggy results in an Aquatic Monster Badge drop, which lets Monica Raybrandt use monster transformation to turn into a Froggy herself.
